NHS Lung Cancer Screening Programme Expands Across Norfolk & Waveney

An NHS programme that detects the early stages of lung cancer, commissioned by NHS Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care Board, is being expanded to people across Norfolk and Waveney.
The programme follows on from the successful trials in Great Yarmouth and Gorleston in 2022 and Lowestoft in 2023, which shows people living there have a higher risk of lung cancer.
The Lung Cancer Screening programme, which was formerly known as the Targeted Lung Health Check, is being offered to current and ex-smokers aged between 55-74 years old, as this group is at the highest risk of developing lung cancer.
In the pilot 8,000 people were offered the programme. Out of those 8,000, 70 people were diagnosed with lung cancer, 70% of whom were at an early stage.
Lung cancer usually does not have any symptoms in its early stages. The programme aims towards a full national rollout in 2029 when it will transition into a national screening programme, a commitment reiterated recently in the NHS Ten Year Plan.
The Lung Cancer Screening Programme is designed to find out how well someone’s lungs are working and to identify any problems at an early stage. Most of the time no issues are found, but if cancer, lung or breathing issues are found early, treatment could be simpler and more successful.
There are two main stages to a Lung Cancer Screening:
- An assessment with a health professional, and
- A scan of your lungs
The programme is being run by TIC Mobile, and the scans will be conducted in community areas, the first of which is the Sainsbury’s in King’s Lynn.
Individuals who are eligible for the Lung Cancer Screening will be contacted by TIC Mobile on behalf of the NHS to arrange lung screening. The invitation will be based on your smoking history on your GP record so if you think this might be out of date, please contact your GP to update them.
You are invited to attend a public launch event, the details of which are below:
