The award-winning Carer Support Nurse initiative has been selected to present at the RCN International Nursing Research Conference 2024 in September.

The Carer Support Nurse initiative received facilitation by UEA Health and Social Care Partners to secure external funding for its evaluation, went on to win a regional award in the NHS Parlimentary Awards in 2023.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) will host the conference at Northumbria University, Newcastle Upon Tyne on September 10th-12th.

Morag Farquhar, Professor of Palliative Care Research at the UEA and her team worked with carers, health and social professionals, voluntary organisations, and national leaders in carer support to develop a new Carer Support Nurse role.

The role was piloted for 12 months, and a study was conducted to explore the role’s values and impact by analysing data on what the nurse did and the views of the carers, patients, health and social care professionals, voluntary organisations, as well as the nurse themselves.

On Thu 15 February 2024, Professor Morag Farquhar led an engaging webinar to disseminate the findings from the Carer Support Nurse project; over 100 delegates signed up to the webinar.

The project piloted a new Carer Support Nurse role specifically designed to help carers themselves, whose responsibilities are numerous but whose needs often go unaddressed.
